Terry Pratchett

Hilly day. Very hilly day! I said to Sven we should get up early to leave when it’s cool. I didn’t mean 5am early though - went back to sleep and we left a bit after 7am.
After a long gruelling climb we reached a nice downhill stretch. I was doing about 40km/h when I saw a pothole ahead, so I eased to the right to avoid it, and found myself in the path of another bigger pothole. Now, potholes are not fun on any bike, but on a bike with 16″ wheels, they are especially troublesome. Anyway, I held on for dear life (I really thought I was going down on that one) and survived - the bike seems to be intact as well.
After another long climb I returned to Geography student mode. The main road from Igoumenitsa (main port in NW Greece) to Thessaloniki (big city in NE Greece) [...]

A Lord’s centurion and now the youngest women’s player to pass 1,000 runs in one-day cricket - Sarah Taylor is certainly enjoying a summer to remember.
The 19-year-old reached the latest landmark in yesterday’s 10-wicket hammering of India at Taunton, tucking away a single to reach the required 16 runs she needed to eclipse the previous record - held by India skipper Mithali Raj, who was 21 years and a week when she brought up the feat.
“I was aware of it at the start of the India series,” Taylor told ecb.co.uk.
“It was on my mind and it was making me nervous. I was relieved to get there. I did not celebrate but it was a proud moment for me. Caroline Atkins said ‘well done’ as she knew what it meant to me, but I knew I still had a job to do. I wanted to get the record and then press [...]

Katherine Brunt, the England fast bowler, capped off a remarkable comeback from a career-threatening back injury to win the Player-of-the-Series award after the 4-0 victory against India.
“It just hit me at that moment,” Brunt told ecb.co.uk. “All the hard times I’ve had with injuries and being left out of tours. To come back when I didn’t think I would. All the months of hard work had paid off.”
Brent was sidelined for 15 months after sustaining a prolapsed disc, which nearly jeopardised her career as a fast bowler. However, she took six wickets at 11.33 against India, which followed a five-for against South Africa at Lord’s earlier in the summer. Her 5 for 24 are the best figures by an England bowler at the venue.
“I’ve got my confidence back now,” she said. “In the last three games I have started to bend my back and put the effort in. Coming back [...]

This disturbing character is advertising hot food. He’s a cone of chips (fries for my American friends) and he appears to be eating himself. Weird.  Perfect Holga subject material though!

Gordon Brown has asked Margaret Thatcher to lunch again; this time at Chequers.
Just what will the newly appointed Scottish Labour MSP leader make of this?
Both Thatcher’s lunch with Brown and the appointment of the Scottish leader will happen on Saturday.
Is Brown deliberately trying to take the wind out the sails of the Scottish Labour MSPs the very day they should be celebrating the appointment of a new leader?
It seems strange timing to me.
The very day that the Scottish Labour MSP group should be promoting their policies and their vision for Scotland, attention will be diverted to another cosy lunch between The Iron Lady and The Clunking Fist.
It speaks volumes for Labour’s agenda that just as the TUC conference is finished with many trade unions unhappy with Labour’s policies, the same weekend Gordon Brown asks Margaret Thatcher to lunch.

It was their previous meeting that urged Jimmy Reid to support [...]

In light of the fact that England performed as well as I had predicted (okay, a little better, even) I wanted to take a look at what really worked for England.
It’s hard to overlook the contribution of Theo Walcott who was exceptional; everything the youngster touched turned to goals. So I’m going to analyse the goals in depth, rather than the whole performance.
If you want to see them to watch as you read they are collected on one page here.
One of the major positives for a lot of journalists and fans that I have talked with (I’ve talked with fans, not journalists, I’ve just read them) was the inclusion of a big target man, namely: Emile Heskey. But as you’ll see from a close look at the goals, Heskey wasn’t really included the plays.
Take a look at the first goal and you’ll see Heskey doesn’t even move, almost until the [...]

I was off yesterday, but read an interesting report Big Brothel - a survey of the off-street sex industry in London (link goes to a 64 page pdf document) - linked to from Andrew Brown’s (a former Lewisham councillor) blog.
The report comes from a position of supporting the abolition of prostitution, a position I personally support.  And it seeks to bust the the widely held notion that prostitution in brothels, massage parlors, private flats and so on is safer, somehow less seedy and that women are more in control.  I think it does that.
From a research and policy perspective, it’s actually a really nice piece of work and a very well put together report.  Would that all social policy research was so well constructed and easy to read (despite the harrowing subject and the selected dehumanising quotes from the “punters”).  I’d encourage anyone interested in social policy to have [...]

It only seems like a week since the last one…
Had yet another run to Heathrow last night to pickup the boss - seems like I live there nowadays (OK, slight exaggeration, I’ve been there 3 times in 3 weeks).
Should be a good weekend - well, aren’t they all?
I’m definitely going to try to save some money - as I mentioned, I need to buy new stuff (especially a bed…shu’up bu’er) but the weekends tend to call to me: “Drink beer snee, drink MORE beer…”
Well, we’ll see…
A sterling performance from England against the Croats on Wednesday - OK, they were down to 10 men, but I still expected us to get turned over and instead we came away with a 1-4 win and top the qualifying group (admittedly it’s only early days, but a good away win has settled the nerves of the supporters at least - the team MUST be [...]
