Chapter 24
Of the Civil Magistrate
1. God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, hath ordained civil magistrates to be under him, over the people, for his own glory and the public[1] good and to this end hath armed them with the power of the sword, for defense and encouragement of them that do good and for the punishment of evil doers.
2. It is lawful for Christians to accept and execute the office of a magistrate when called thereunto[2]; in the management whereof, as they ought especially to maintain justice and peace, according to the wholesome laws of each kingdom[3] and commonwealth, so for that end they may lawfully now, under the New Testament wage war upon just and necessary occasions.
3. Civil magistrates being set up by God for the ends aforesaid; subjection, in all lawful things commanded by them, ought to be yielded by us in the Lord, [...]

MoD to hold bearskin hat meeting

Bearskin-hatted guardsmen at this year’s Trooping the Colour

The Ministry of Defense is to meet an animal rights group to discuss alternatives to the bearskin hats worn by guards at Buckingham Palace.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) has approached Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney to design a new shape for the 18in hat.
The charity has previously called for fake fur to be used, but said the MoD was not happy with prototype designs.
Baroness Taylor, minister for defense procurement, will meet Peta on Tuesday.
Tourist sight
The MoD says it is open to alternatives to real bearskin, but that previous attempts to replace it with synthetic fur have failed because the material has not been durable or weatherproof enough.
The ministry also wants to avoid if possible any change in the look of the red-coated sentries guarding Buckingham Palace, whose uniforms have long been one [...]

I’m back on the job-hunt again.
I’m stressed about money and job stuff, but (unfortunately) I’m not the only one in this situation.  Prayers to my friends and anyone else being directly affected by this crummy economy.
I take my CTRS certification exam in a month, let the studying begin!
I’m having a hard time waiting to see what God has in store for me.  In multiple areas.  Still, I remember Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to help you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I get to go to Athens this week for work and have started planning my stops before and [...]

England v South Africa, 4th ODI, Lord’s

Scorecard

Andrew Flintoff starred once again with bat and ball as South Africa were condemned to their fourth defeat of the series

Kevin Pietersen produced a bruising innings of 40 from 34 balls, before Owais Shah and Andrew Flintoff carried their side to victory in a fourth-wicket stand of 44, as England chased down a revised target of 137 in 20 overs to move a step closer to their coveted 5-0 whitewash. On a piecemeal day’s cricket that was delayed for more than two hours then suffered two further lengthy interruptions, Shah and Pietersen roused England from a sluggish start with a third-wicket stand of 74 in 9.1 overs, before Flintoff scorched them to victory with 14 balls remaining.
In the end the result was emphatic, but this performance was not quite the waltz that England had produced in their previous two matches at Trent Bridge [...]

By Bishop Thomas G. Doran
The Observer, the Official Newspaper of the Catholic Diocese of Rockford, where it appeared in the August 11th issue.

I want to touch on this matter before we get too close to the November madness. As human beings, as citizens of a “first world country,” as Americans, and as Catholics, most importantly, we have to take count of the circumstances in which we live. We know that the only creatures of God that outlast time are those created having intellect and will. All other things, with the passage of time, break up or break down.
Many of the issues that confront us are serious, and we know by now that the political parties in our country are at loggerheads as to how to solve them. We know, for instance, that adherents of one political party would place us squarely on the road to suicide as a people.
The seven [...]
